Under which US President did Henry Kissinger become National Security Adviser?

In 1968, President-elect Richard Nixon chose Kissinger to be his National Security Adviser.  Kissinger was an exciting choice because some people had accused him of being too close with foreign governments and not caring about US citizens’ interests. He served as the Secretary of State during John F Kennedy’s administration before going on secondment for another five years under Lyndon B Johnson.

Henry A. Kissinger, born on May 27th, 1923, Henry A. Kissinger is a German-American political scientist who greatly influenced US foreign policy while serving as an adviser for national security affairs under Presidents Nixon and Ford from 1969-1976. In 1973 he was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Le Duc Tho of North Vietnam after they had worked together to negotiate a peaceful settlement of the US involvement in the Vietnamese War.

In December 1968, New York Governor and Republican presidential aspirant Nelson Rockefeller appointed Kissinger as his adviser. He served in this role until becoming Nixon’s assistant for national security affairs later that same year; after serving two tumultuous terms under Gerald Ford (1977-1981), he was reappointed by President Ronald Reagan to head up the Department of State from 1983-1985.

One of the most influential figures in US presidential administrations, Henry Kissinger, developed policies that led to several critical diplomatic outcomes, including China’s opening up and Vietnam peace treaty negotiations between America and North Vietnamese government delegation. He also played an integral part within President Nixon’s administration by brokering landmark agreements such as Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) with the Soviets in 1972.  During this period, tensions between American allies like Saudi Arabia led up towards Yom Kippur War five years later, where he advised against military intervention supporting Israel while offering support for Saddam Hussein.

Henry Kissinger is one of the most well-known and highly decorated men in America. He has received medals from foreign countries and his own country, earning him a position among excellent American diplomats.
